Nokia N97 Mini is Out for preorder

December 2, 2009

Hello folks,
Nokia has recently pre-launched the Nokia N97 Mini, a miniature version of one of their most hyped devices, the Nokia N97. I personally find the Mini much more useful and better than the N97. First of all, it's got all the features of the original N97, no drawbacks.

Opposing to this, it's got a smaller screen (hence more pocket friendly and less power consuming) and a capacitive touchscreen, which supports multi touch. This means that you can pinch and stretch your fingers to zoom images and webpages, moreover, the touchscreen is much more smooth and sensitive. It's so cool.
Capacitive touchscreens are much more superior to the ******* resistive touchscreens. If you ever use an iPhone/iPod Touch/LG Arena/HTC Magic/HP Touchsmart or something like that, you should know the difference. This is Nokia's first capacitive touch device, though X6 (another capacitive device) was announced much earlier, it hasnt been launched as yet.

Best of luck to Nokia with the mini!

Nokia E72 finally out in India

November 29, 2009

Nokia's latest Business cellphone, the Nokia E72 is finally out and ready for selling in India. The E72 is a improved version of the E71.
The E72 has a number of improvements like:
5 megapixels camera (with flash)
Optical Navigation Key, which makes browsing photos and web pages more fun
In-built Ovi Support
Larger screen
Ultimate 3.5 G (Speeds upto 10+ Mbps)
GPS, etc.

With so much in hand, the Nokia E72 costs Rs 22,898/- which is quite a decent launch price. With the company being Nokia, we can be sure that the price will drop in the upcoming months (Remember 5800, how it's prices dropped from 28,000 to 14,000 within an year). Nokia is surely going to reduce prices of the Nokia E 63 and Nokia E 71 to groom its Christmas Line-up. And the E72 will be in the spotlight.

The Ultimate Chrome Themes Advert on Youtube

November 27, 2009

Google was always partial when advertising it's products on it's site. Like the always empty Google homepage showed the "Download Google Chrome" box when they released it. All Google sites like Orkut, Youtube, etc. showed "Try this website in a new browser" text. And now, they have released a new advertisement of Google Chrome themes which is the Ultimate of them all. It defies all laws of Youtube.

You can check out the video here, and you should definitely watch the ending. It will blow you up.

An important Day in the History of Torrents

November 26, 2009

Today is an important day in the history of torrents, as one of the best and most popular torrent distribution site, Mininova.org limits itself to content distribution. Probably while it is a win-win for the anti-piracy group, it's a big loss for the millions of people that flocked to Mininova everyday in search of some great programs, movies, music and games.

Mininova announced it's limitation implementation here: Mininova Blog.
Mininova was the primary hood for many of the best rippers like xRG, Klown, ESPALPSP, aXXo, Bugz Bunny and countless others that provided quality content to the world. Too bad it had to end like this. The homepage of Mininova went through a drastic change too, with more images on display than ever.

Here are some comments from Mininova fans:

"THIS CANT BE TRUE, HAVE VISITED YOU EVERY DAY FOR YEARS, YOU HAVE TAUGHT ME EVERYTIHNG THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT COMPUTERS AND PROGRAMMES, YOU WILL BE VERY SADLY MISSED (EYES ARE FILLING UP)……….COME BACK……………………..PLZ"
by ARKY

"This is a sad sad day for me!!!
Does anyone have any other good torrent sites?"
by Doombringer

"I have no words to say any thing except Good Bye mininova and thank you very much for all the entertainment you had provided."

"

What people do with their Old Cellphones

November 25, 2009

New cellphones release every month nowadays, and it is pretty hard to keep up with them. With the tendency of people (especially teenagers and youngsters) to keep up with the latest trends, they might change cellphone numerous times in an year. What do they do with their old phones? I wanted to find out.

My answers came from myLot. Where one person had already asked this question. I carefully read the responses and interesting results were churned out.

Most of the people said that they usually donated their cellphones to a charity, or gave it to their relatives, since they boasted of no monetary value. One or two people sold their old cellphones over eBay, and some actually kept it with them as a memorabilia.

Whatever you do, just make good use of your old cellphone. Consider Recycling it at the Nokia recycle centre.

Google Chrome OS boots up in 7 seconds!

November 23, 2009

Unbelievable, Isn't it? But it is as true as it sounds, the upcoming OS from Google (Which you can currently run on virtual machines) will boot up in just 7 seconds. Google names it "The Chromium Operating System" which is a completely Internet based operating system, which will be incorporated in netbooks by Summer 2010.

The Operating system will reside in the memory itself, rather than slow and bulky hard-drives which is on of the reason for it's quick boot up. Google announced this operating system about 3-4 months back, and since then there were a lot of rumours about the opertaing system. As the fog fades, more relevant and clear information is coming out. BTW, you can test Google Chromium OS yourself if you want to, by running it on a virtual machine. Scroll at the end of the article for a tutorial on this.

Google says that the Chromium OS boots up just as quick as your TV, which is definitely a nice thing, as one major reason for which I preferred cellphones over PCs was that they always remains on, allowing me to quickly surf the web, check the mail, or listen to some nice tunes. People with an unlimited Internet plan will be able to take full use of the Operating system, as it needs to log you into your google account even before it starts. Anyways, stakes are high this time and we hope this OS is a huge success. And for all you non-techies, "Don't call it Android, please"

Here is the tutorial: (As promised)

The New Revolution in Mobile Gaming: Sony Ericcson Yari

November 16, 2009

The Sony Ericcson Yari is another mobile gaming revolution from Sony. First let's go through it's features. The Yari features a gorgeous 2.4 inch screen, along with a 5 MP Camera which has a plethora of extras like autofocus, face detection, and movement detection. Then to add to the features there are all the set of a multimedia phone, like music playback, video playback, and the inbuild accelerometer provides some fun changes in the UI too.
Connectivity options include USB, Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS, 3G, but unfortunately, no Wi-Fi. Poor Yari, I must say.

The place where the phone strikes gold is in gaming. The phone doesnt have any dedicated graphics processor or anything, but the camera on it detects movements (As mentioned above), which helps in motion gaming just like you must have seen in Xbox Natal or PS3 Eye toy. This is a great upliftment from Accelerometer based gaming seen in earlier cellphones. An intelligent camera is the secret to the Yari's gaming revolution. Let's see how well it does.

The Price of Sony Ericcson Yari in India is approximately Rs.16,000

Firefox celebrates it's 5th anniversary

November 15, 2009

On Monday, Mozilla Firefox completed it's 5th anniversary. This open source browser that started from scratch is now a formidable competitor to many popular browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, Opera and Google Chrome. Mozilla Firefox crossed over 1 billion download by 330 million users over the Internet. It is also the most used browser that comes built-in with most Linux OS.

I find it one if the most innovative and secure browser over the web. It has got some really cool features like add-ons, plugins, themes, personas that make web browsing so much easy and fun. It was built on the foundation of the Netscape browser, which I think went extinct in the competiton.

Firefox is currently in it's 3.5th version, with the 3.6 beta already available for download.

A cool super value touch laptop from Acer

November 13, 2009

Till now, only a singular touch laptop dominated the scene, which was the HP touchsmart notebook, incredibly powerful, incredibly stylish, incredibly unaffordable. To give some (tough) competition to the King, Acer recently launched it's Windows 7 run touch notebook, and after reading it's specifications and price, I find it amazingly underpriced. I mentioned in one of my recent post about Windows 7 kickstarting the touch era.

Now talking about the laptop, it is running Windows 7 Home Premium, has 3 GB RAM, and a 512 MB Graphics Card. A killer rig, isn't it? The only flaw I can find is that it is run by a Pentium based processor, which is quite outdated, to put it right. But with such heavy memory on-board, performance might not really be a problem.

And the thing that puts it in the limelight is it's multiple-touch supporting capacitive touchscreen. Windows 7 takes it to a whole new level, but the only thing I fear is the Pentium Processor integration, which might act as a downgrade. Probably the 512 MB graphics card and 3 GB RAM give enough horsepower to enjoy High definition multimedia, high end games, and memory famished applications like Photoshop, web design, though 3D design still remains a doubt.

But priced at a very very reasonable Rs. 41,000 this laptop gives the best value for money, in the touch market. The capacitive touchscreen takes it on an even higher level, as it goes for superior touch experience and multiple touch detection.

So my eyes are already glued to this cool laptop, don't let this slip away from you. I do expect a price drop in Christmas next month when products like the Sony Vaio L will arrive in the market, though the drop will be just 2-3k, you can however expect a similar product with hopefully a better processor.

Toodles for now,
AJ-Rox

Sony Ericcson Xperia X5 Pureness: A transparent display phone

October 30, 2009

It was high time since Sony brought something new, and now, they have. The Sony Ericcson Xperia X5 Pureness, which features a transparent display, which is hard to see even in bright light.

Though the design is definitely eye catching, and the transparent display acts like a cherry topping, this phone wont appeal to anyone since nowadays people are very demanding from their mobile phones. Even if the phone supports web browsing or video playback or a camera, it would be of no use in the hard to see display. The only feature it can have is music playback and stuff like that. The phone is really a bore, but it would be fun to show the transparent screen around. And yes, phones like these aren't released everyday.

Apple iPad: The next revolution from Apple?

October 29, 2009

Apple’s iPad was coming a long way but hey, here’s something that’s giving the fans-of-the-forbidden-geek-fruit new hope. Well, we did finally not waste our time by rumoring around with the size and announcement of the tablet, though the latter came even earlier than we projected. To be more specific, the ‘real’ iPad will sport a 10.7 inch touch screen display and will run on the iPhone OS! There’s also word that it will have both, 3G and non-3G versions. That’s surely cool. We can expect the iPad announcement by January 19th 2010. The release date is most likely to be in the middle of the year. So long, so bad.

And Here comes the Touch era! (Sony Vaio L and HP Touchsmart 300)

October 27, 2009

If you are a regular reader of this blog (which I doubt myself), then you should know that I announced the arrival of the Touch PC era when Windows 7 was launched. To add fuel to my announcement, Sony and HP have already announced their touch PCs running Windows 7. Both the Desktop PCs run Windows 7, which is said to support touchscreen technology at its best. Both the PCs have just been announced and their is no official announcement or hints on the price, but I guess they will surely be over 50,000 INR, as innovation comes at a price. Though you might be familiar with the HP Touchsmart PC, the new Touchsmart 300 just has Windows 7 installed with a couple of spec upgrades. But personally, I find the the Sony Vaio L much appealing both internally and externally. The first two images are of the Sony Vaio L while the 3rd picture is of HP Touchsmart 300. The second photo of Sony Vaio L shows a person using the touch display to browse images. Probably the image browsing is a custom interface, and I don't think Windows 7 has it. Both the Desktop PCs have the cabinet-in-display design, which is "IN" for the current generation. I find both the PCs appealing externally, but I am sure when the price is announced, I will have to ponder my thoughts over it again.

GTA Chinatown Wars final thoughts

October 26, 2009

If you go briefly through the archive, you will find that I criticized GTA chinatown wars after watching the gameplay videos over YouTube.

I have played the game myself now, and my thoughts have altered a bit. The overhead camera does suck, but it gives room for some beautiful effects during gameplay, like the lightning in thunderstorms, etc.

The storytelling has also taken a step back with comic-style cutscenes, which lack voice overs. But this version of GTA tries to do something different from it's two previous iterations on the PSP. Unlike GTA LCS and GTA VCS, this game is based in 2009, so any technology lover like me will simply love it. I love the renovated menu interface, in which you are actually dealing with the interface of a high end PDA, which I found is strikingly similar to Sony's XMB interface. You will also love the blogging jokes and spam email you come across from time to time.

The change in my overall impression has been an affirmative one, and I take some of my criticizing words back from my earlier post. But there are still a lot this game lacks.

BillBoard Hot 100 Videos Archive Website Review

Who doesn’t know about the Billboard. The most prestigious place for a music track to be. The Billboard has been ranking music tracks from 1946 and is an amazing source to know the changing taste of people. Whilesearching for interesting music videos to watch on YouTube, I came across this interesting site called BillBoard Hot 100 Video Archive which lets you browse the BillBoard top 100 charts (starting 1946) and watch the music videos of the chart busters over YouTube.
I find it really fascinating that this site has links to videos as old as 1946! Moreover, most video links posted redirects you to an ad-free, high quality video. This site really has a huge archive of YouTube videos and the best part is that the site is absolutely easy to use.

As soon as you enter BillBoard Videos, you will be amazed at the simplicity and ease-of-use factor of the site. The site is very straight-forward, simple to use, and the best part is that there are no misleading links, unlike many other sites. Many pages of the site are ad-free, while the ad-bearing pages are designed in such an excellent manner that the ads do not bear with the user’s browsing experience.
The Home page of the site has a really plain and straight-forward feel to it, which is really laudable as most of the web pages nowadays are stuffed with useless matter. You will be presented with a list of years and you can select and year’s BillBoard videos.

Once you click an year, you are presented with a long list of the top 100 grossing music tracks at the end of the year. Each video has an embedded hyperlink which when clicked, redirects you to the music video of that particular song on YouTube. I really loved the fact that the site doesn’t has any useless images or content, which makes the site load incredibly fast and makes is very much compatible with mobile browsers.
Along with that BillBoard Videos has the “Contact Us” section on that site, which presents you with an easy to use form for contacting the site administrator. I really like this feature as many sites miss on it. The songs listed in the pages are really informative as they are named under the Song Title and Artist Name, along with the rank of that particular song on the Billboard. I really appreciate this feature as this makes the site alternatively usable for research and other information fetching tasks, providing that it’s easy enough to be used by a caveman.
I really loved this site and appreciate the effort put into constructing such an amazing and full-of-content site. Putting together the simplicity in using, easy navigation and straight-forward browsing of the site, it is the best resource for searching BillBoard music and watching the videos. I would recommend this site to anyone who has a taste for music and wants to know about various amazing songs that once topped the BillBoard charts.
Here is the link to the site: BillBoard Hot 100 Video Archive

GTA Chinatown Wars Review

October 21, 2009

GTA Chinatown Wars, when released for the Nintendo DS sucked big time and it was pretty much expected since a loser console like the Nintendo DS cannot handle games like GTA.

I was really excited when I came to know that it is being released for the Sony PSP. I had a lot of expectations from it, but sadly, I am disappointed.

I thought that the game would be as rocking as Gta vice city stories or Liberty City Stories, but GTA Chinatown Wars takes one step back, especially with the overhead camera and textual story telling. I am okay with the static cutscenes, but an overhead camera is simply undigestable. Seriously mate, you are taking me back to the days of GTA and GTA 2.
Rockstar, you need to gear up your weapons, seriously.

Samsung Omnia Pro

Samsung Omnia Pro is a new non-touchscreen phone from Samsung that aims to compete with the Nokia E63/E71 and the Blackberry Curve. It is a business phone with a full QWERTY keypad and Windows Mobile 6.5

If you are confused between Nokia E63 and Nokia E71, then you should consider this phone, which is an intermediate between the two. It has GPS Navigation, Windows Mobile OS, WiFi and EDGE connectivity, and a 3.2 megapixel camera to top it all. It misses 3G connectivity, but with WiFi available at most home and offices, it won't be missed much.

For a country like India, where 3G is still an alien, this phone is a perfect pick for the business persons. Another good factor is it's price, which is just around rs 14,500.

You should definitely consider this phone, don't miss this.

Samsung Colby: Bringing sexy back

October 17, 2009

Samsung Colby is another addition to Samsung's lineup of touch phones. Colby, as a cellphone, is aimed towards the youth, as it has an affordable price tag, fancy and changeable back covers and is a touch screen phone, boasting of a 2.8 inch touchscreen. As a topping to the cream, it has inbuilt social networking applications, which is one of the most craved upon feature by youth.

While the Colby misses on a lot of specific features, Samsung has also launched Colby PRO (Blackberry clone) and Colby TXT (texter's treat with a full slide out keyboard) for the spec hungry people (like me).

iPod Touch the Jack of all trades

October 13, 2009

My personal advice to all technology fans would be to go and buy an iPod touch 2nd generation while they last. It is because with the launch of the 3rd generation touch, the prices of the second generation have fallen drastically. The iPod touch is a really classy device and a revolutionary one too. I doubt apple for selling such a great device at such a low price.

The iPod Touch will become your best companion with time, as it has become mine. It has got really amazing features and with the launch of the OS 3.0, it's even better. It is everything you ever wanted to have, at a price that feels like a steal deal.

Techn O' Treat has been revamped

After a lot of thinking, I concluded that the old Techn O' Treat wasn't going anywhere as I was just copy-pasting content from technology sites because I just didn't had enough time. But since I am free now, I have revamped Techn O' Treat into a completely new experience for you...

Techn O' Treat still remains a technology weblog, with technology news that you are interested in, but it will also function as my personal weblog alongside. To make it easier for you, there's a widget on the left side that says "Select Content", with which you can easily sort content in tech-related and my personal ones...and read whatever you want to.

Thank you as of now, and keep watching this space for some hot tech news...
